A woman in Sangameshwar lost ₹2.29 lakh in a fake Telegram-based work-from-home scam. Cyber fraudsters promised returns but kept demanding more money. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
SANGAMESHWAR, JULY 5: A woman from Golavli-Baudhwadi in Sangameshwar taluka has fallen victim to a cyber fraud, losing over ₹2.29 lakh to online scammers who lured her with a fake work-from-home opportunity.
According to the Sangameshwar police, the victim, Nita Premdas Gamre, was contacted via the Telegram app by an account under the name ‘Vanshika’ offering a work-from-home job. Believing the offer to be legitimate, Gamre joined a Telegram group titled Customer Support, where she interacted with individuals named Hina, Nikhil Patil (stated to be the owner), Vignesh (admin), and Sumit, who claimed to be a senior promoter of the e-commerce platform Tata Click.
Once part of the group, Gamre was asked to perform various online “tasks” and was instructed to pay advance amounts to proceed to the next levels. Trusting the process, she transferred a total of ₹2,29,132 into multiple bank accounts as directed by the accused.
However, instead of receiving her promised earnings or refunds, she was pressured to deposit even more money. Realizing she had been duped, Gamre approached the Sangameshwar police station and filed a complaint.
The fraudulent activity reportedly occurred between June 23 and 29, 2025. Police have registered a case and initiated a cybercrime investigation.
