Parsi man Gustad Borjorji left his Shahibaug flat to his Hindu cook’s granddaughter, whom he treated like a daughter. Court approved the will; the girl now owns the property.
August 7, 2025 | Ahmedabad: In an extraordinary and emotional turn of events, a Parsi man from Gujarat named Gustad Borjorji, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 89, left behind a will that surprised everyone. Instead of passing on his 159-square yard Shahibaug flat to relatives, he bequeathed it to the granddaughter of his Hindu cook, 13-year-old Amisha Makwana.
Gustad, a former Tata Industries employee, had lost his wife in 2001 and had no children. In his final years, he lived alone but was cared for by his cook and her granddaughter, Amisha. He supported Amisha’s education, paying her school fees, books, and other expenses, treating her like his own child.
One month before his death in February 2014, Gustad wrote a will in front of two witnesses, legally transferring his property to Amisha. Since she was a minor at the time, his nephew Bahram Engineer was made the executor and her legal guardian.
In 2023, Amisha, now an HR professional, approached the Ahmedabad Civil Court through lawyer Adil Syed seeking succession certificate approval. She described their bond as parental and said Gustad wished to adopt her but respected her Hindu identity and family ties.
No objections were raised during the court process. Gustad’s nephew even submitted a no-objection certificate. On August 2, the court approved the will and granted Amisha Makwana a succession certificate, officially transferring ownership of the property to a girl who was not biologically related to him, but emotionally closer than family.
