PETA India urges Maharashtra to ban nine aggressive foreign dog breeds, citing safety and illegal breeding for fights. A letter to officials demands immediate policy action to prevent harm and misuse.
Mumbai | July 30, 2025: PETA India has appealed to the Maharashtra government to ban the breeding, sale, and ownership of nine foreign dog breeds deemed dangerous due to their aggressive traits and misuse in illegal activities. In a formal letter addressed to Dr. K. H. Govindraj, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, PETA highlighted that breeds like Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, Pakistani Bully Kuttas, Dogo Argentinos, Presa Canarios, Fila Brasileiros, Bull Terriers, Cane Corsos, and XL Bullies are often bred specifically for illegal dog fights.
The organization claims that such dogs, bred for aggression, frequently become unmanageable for unsuspecting owners—posing serious safety risks to families and the public. PETA stressed the need for a policy intervention, urging Maharashtra to follow in the footsteps of several countries and Indian states that have already restricted or banned certain dangerous dog breeds to protect both animal welfare and public safety.
While some argue for better regulation rather than an outright ban, PETA insists that the safety concerns, combined with the inhumane use of these breeds, call for immediate and decisive action.
