Pimpri-Chinchwad Faces stretching resentment Over Contaminated Water Inspite of Crores Spent on its Supply
Despite heavy investment in water supply, Pimpri-Chinchwad residents are upset with contaminated water, claiming it causes health issues. The Municipal Corporation maintains the water is safe, dismissing concerns.
Pune, April 28, 2025: Pimpri-Chinchwad has been investing significant resources into ensuring clean and safe drinking water for its residents, with the Municipal Corporation spending a staggering Rs 228 crore annually on water supply. However, citizens are now raising alarms over the continued supply of contaminated and foul-smelling water in certain areas, especially during the hot summer months. Inspite of this, the Municipal Administration insists that the water is drinkable.
The city annually draws water from the Asakhed Dam, Pavana, Andhra, and Bhama rivers at a cost of about Rs 45 crore to the Irrigation Department. 30 million liters of clean water is bought every day at a cost of Rs pure water from MIDC. This enormous expense includes the cost of collection of water, purification, maintenance, and labor for the water supply system. To facilitate even distribution, a special Skoda system was installed, which was designed to mechanize water supply in the entire city.
However, the complaints from citizens are mounting, as they claim the water supplied is causing health problems like diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and fever, particularly affecting the elderly and children. Despite showing the Municipal Administration samples of the tainted water, the officials are adamant that the water is safe to drink, causing widespread frustration among residents who feel their concerns are being ignored.
In response to complaints about illegal water tapping, the Water Supply Department conducted an inspection and seized over 250 illegal pumps that were directly drawing water from municipal lines, exacerbating the problem. The department also tested 22,288 water samples from January to March 2025, all of which reportedly met safety standards and were deemed potable. Additionally, private lab tests corroborated this finding, further confirming the Municipal Corporation’s stance.
While these reports suggest that the water is safe, residents continue to feel the impact of what they believe is an ongoing issue with water quality, questioning the reliability of these findings. The authorities stand firm in their belief that the complaints are unsubstantiated, leaving citizens to deal with the unpleasant reality of contaminated water.
