Pimpri Chinchwad’s Bus Rapid Transit System struggles with broken infrastructure and infrequent buses, pushing commuters toward the metro. Residents demand action as neglected corridors and traffic woes erode trust in public transport.

Once a beacon of efficient public transport, the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Pimpri Chinchwad is losing its appeal. Designed to connect key areas like Sangvi to Kiwale and Nashik Phata to Wakad, the system promised swift, reliable travel. However, with too few buses, crumbling infrastructure, and growing metro popularity, its corridors are now marred by congestion and neglect, frustrating daily commuters.

Built with significant funding under the JNNURM scheme, the BRTS lanes were meant to ease traffic while prioritizing buses, cyclists, and pedestrians. Yet, broken barricades, invaded by private vehicles, and dismantled bus shelters—often damaged by metro construction—have left the system in disarray. Monsoon waterlogging, littered stops, and stolen materials further degrade the experience, turning once-modern facilities into hazards.

The operational Dapodi-Nigdi metro line, running parallel to a 12.5-km BRTS corridor, has intensified calls to close redundant routes. Commuters, facing long waits due to infrequent buses, are increasingly choosing the metro, leaving BRT lanes underutilized while adjacent roads choke with traffic. Despite crores spent on construction and upkeep, including costly flyover stops, the system fails to deliver the promised fast, reliable service.

Residents express growing dismay over the wasted potential and taxpayer money, with some advocating for the corridors’ removal, as seen in Hadapsar and Nagar Road. Authorities insist on strengthening the system and deny plans to shut it down, but the lack of maintenance, poor hygiene, and passive oversight by civic bodies and traffic police fuel public frustration. As Pimpri Chinchwad grapples with urban mobility, the BRTS’s decline underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to restore trust in public transport.
