Pimpri-Chinchwad clinches the top spot in Maharashtra and seventh nationally in the Swachh Survekshan 2024, earning praise for its sanitation efforts. The city’s residents and civic body unite to maintain its 7-star garbage-free and water-plus status.
Pune | 19 July, 2025: In a remarkable achievement, Pimpri-Chinchwad has emerged as Maharashtra’s cleanest city in the Swachh Survekshan 2024, securing the seventh rank among India’s million-plus cities. This vibrant industrial hub, known for its bustling communities, has shown what collective effort and dedication can accomplish, climbing from 13th place nationally in 2023 to a stellar position this year. The city’s success in the nationwide cleanliness survey, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, reflects the tireless work of residents, sanitation workers, and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to create a cleaner, healthier environment.

The Swachh Survekshan evaluates cities on sanitation, waste management, and citizen engagement, and Pimpri-Chinchwad excelled across these fronts. The city retained its prestigious 7-star garbage-free certification, a testament to its scientific approach to waste processing. From door-to-door segregated waste collection to composting units and recycling plants, the PCMC has implemented innovative systems to ensure waste is managed efficiently. Residents have played a pivotal role, diligently sorting waste and reducing plastic use, making cleanliness a shared mission.
Pimpri-Chinchwad also reaffirmed its water-plus status, achieving 100% compliance in wastewater management. The city’s sewage treatment plants, protection of natural water bodies, and reuse of treated water have set a high standard for sustainable urban living. These efforts ensure that rivers remain clean and open defecation is eliminated, creating a healthier ecosystem for all. The city’s progress in these areas highlights its commitment to not just meeting but exceeding national benchmarks.
This achievement is a community triumph, with schools, NGOs, housing societies, and local businesses joining hands with the PCMC. Awareness campaigns and strict penalties for littering have fostered a culture of responsibility, while residents’ feedback has been a key factor in the survey’s scoring. The city’s leap in rankings reflects the power of collective action, with every citizen contributing to a cleaner Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Despite this success, challenges remain. Some residents point to areas needing improvement, like consistent waste collection in newly merged zones or cleaner public toilets. The PCMC is already looking ahead, planning zero-waste policies and sustainable initiatives to aim for the top national spot in future surveys. This victory is not just a ranking but a celebration of a city united in its pursuit of cleanliness and sustainability, inspiring others to follow suit.
