Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Illegal Excavation Crisis: 120+ Complaints Ignored

Unregulated digging is scarring Pimpri-Chinchwad, with builders flouting laws and causing environmental havoc. Despite over 120 complaints, authorities have failed to act, fueling distrust among residents.

Pune| 01August, 2025: Pimpri-Chinchwad is grappling with a rampant illegal excavation crisis that threatens its environment and erodes public trust. Across the city, builders are digging without permits, ignoring court orders, and exploiting regulatory loopholes, while officials turn a blind eye. Over 120 complaints have been lodged with the revenue department, police, and municipal authorities, yet no meaningful action has been taken to curb this widespread issue.

In areas like Chovisawadi and Charholi, illegal excavation continues unabated, even on land protected by court stay orders. Massive construction projects are sprouting up, often without proper authorization, leaving hills scarred and ecosystems damaged. The financial toll is staggering, with the government losing crores due to unrecovered penalties and unauthorized digging far exceeding approved limits. Builders reportedly excavate thousands of brass while securing permits for mere fractions, exploiting a system that seems unwilling to enforce accountability.

Residents and activists have repeatedly raised alarms, filing complaints about the environmental destruction and unchecked construction. In some cases, fines were imposed, only to be mysteriously waived, deepening suspicions of collusion between builders and officials. The lack of transparency and follow-through has left communities frustrated, as their concerns about safety, sustainability, and legal violations go unaddressed.

The Haveli tehsildar has acknowledged the flood of complaints, admitting that excavation without permission is illegal. However, the gap between acknowledgment and action remains wide. Builders continue to operate with impunity, erecting compound walls and digging vast areas without oversight. This unregulated activity not only harms the environment but also poses risks to nearby residents, as unstable land and altered landscapes could lead to unforeseen consequences.

For the people of Pimpri-Chinchwad, the illegal excavation racket is more than a bureaucratic failure—it’s a betrayal of their right to a safe and sustainable city. The unchecked construction boom, driven by greed and enabled by inaction, threatens to reshape the region’s future. Residents are left wondering when authorities will step up to protect their land and enforce the law.

The situation demands urgent reform, including stricter enforcement, transparent penalty collection, and accountability for officials who waive fines without justification. Only by addressing this crisis head-on can Pimpri-Chinchwad restore trust and safeguard its environment for future generations.
