Pimpri-Chinchwad's Silent Suffering: Spike in Animal Cruelty Cases Alarms Activists
Pimpri-Chinchwad is grappling with a shocking rise in animal cruelty, especially toward stray dogs. Despite 40 reported cases, many go unreported. Activists urge stricter law enforcement and public awareness to combat this growing inhumanity.
Pune, May 03, 2025: Pimpri-Chinchwad city is witnessing a disturbing rise in animal cruelty, with 40 official cases reported in just the past 15 months. But activists say these numbers barely scratch the surface—many incidents go unreported, often due to fear or indifference from citizens. There has been recent brutality that has stunned residents.Previously, nine dogs were discovered poisoned in Mahindra Anthia Society.
These inhumane acts sparked outrage throughout the city, bringing to the fore the increasing threat of cruelty towards stray animals—particularly dogs. Stray dogs face violent abuse, from being run over, pelted with stones, and beaten with sticks, to more gruesome acts like firecrackers forced into their mouths or being set on fire.
Some are even poisoned through food. Most of these acts stem from misplaced fear or frustration—over barking, dog fights, or minor incidents like a dog chasing a child or defecating in the society area. There are around 30,000 stray dogs in the city, many vaccinated and living in territorial packs.
However, the sight of groups of dogs often sparks fear, leading to cruel actions. There are laws protecting animal rights—India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 makes it illegal to harm animals. One would go to jail or pay a fine for an initial offense, and repeated offenders can face a maximum of three years’ jail time.
Section 325 of the IPC, enacted in 2023, goes a step further, punishing animal killings as a serious crime with a jail term of up to five years. Animal lovers now urge both awareness and stronger enforcement to ensure strays are treated with the compassion they deserve.
