PMC Extends Property Tax Discount Deadline Till June 30
Pune, March 31st, 2025 : In a major relief to taxpayers, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has extended the deadline for availing property tax discounts until June 30, 2025. The civic body, which typically offers 5% to 10% discounts to those who clear their dues before May 31, has granted an additional month for payments this year.
According to civic officials, the extension was necessary due to expected delays in bill distribution, primarily caused by the recalculations required for the 40% tax discount on self-occupied properties.
Currently, 12.5 lakh properties fall under PMC’s tax net, and nearly 50% of taxpayers make payments before the usual May 31 deadline, contributing around ₹1,000 crore in revenue within the first quarter of the financial year. However, with the revised schedule, the bill distribution process—normally completed in April—may now extend into May.
The 40% discount on self-occupied properties was first introduced in 1970 but was never officially notified by the state government. It was later scrapped in 2018-19 after being declared illegal by central government auditors. Following public outcry, PMC reinstated the benefit in 2022-23.
PMC Administrator and Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale approved the proposal to extend the tax discount deadline. Meanwhile, civic activists have urged authorities to simplify tax bills, stating that many taxpayers find them confusing. They have demanded that bills clearly indicate whether the 40% discount has been applied.
