Pune | May 21, 2025: Heavy rains on Tuesday evening exposed glaring lapses in the infrastructure of Pune International Airport’s new terminal. Waterlogging at the terminal’s exit gate forced passengers to wade through muddy, dirty water, drawing sharp criticism from the public. The incident has raised serious concerns over the quality of recent construction and preparedness for the upcoming monsoon.
Built just a year ago at a cost of crores, the new terminal’s drainage system failed during a single evening of rain. The airport’s parking area was also flooded, leading to long vehicle queues and delays for those arriving to pick up or drop off passengers. Tuesday evenings usually see heavy footfall at the airport, and the chaos caused by waterlogging frustrated travelers.
Although flight operations remained unaffected, the condition of passenger amenities has come under heavy scrutiny. Many questioned how such flooding occurred before the monsoon had even officially begun.
Youth Congress State General Secretary Prathamesh Abnave submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol, demanding a probe into the incident. He alleged that the situation reflects poor quality of work and possible misuse of funds in the name of development. Abnave warned that if no action is taken, the Youth Congress will launch protests on the streets.
He added, “Pune Airport is not just a facility—it’s a symbol of the city’s global image. Letting it flood insults the taxpayers who funded it.”
