Pune | June 4, 2025: The new terminal, which cost ₹423 crore to build, covers a total area of 52,000 square meters and has the capacity to handle 90 lakh passengers per year. With 10 aerobridges, 72 check-in counters, and 24 self-check-in counters, the facility is positioned to effectively manage the growing passenger traffic. The terminal also has contemporary facilities like large waiting lounges, retail units, and restaurants to make the travel experience smoother. The building also has green features like a solar energy system to generate part of its power requirements.

Pune Airport currently services approximately 70 flights every day, which go to important cities in India. Despite this, the current infrastructure has not been able to cope with the growing number of travelers, causing regular congestion and delays. The new terminal is designed to mitigate this by doubling the capacity of the airport. It will accommodate both local and international flights, with separate areas for customs and immigration to facilitate the process of international travel. The facility further features sophisticated baggage handling systems to minimize delays.

The expansion project, which started in 2018, suffered several setbacks as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and other logistical issues. Nevertheless, with the terminal now being ready, authorities are turning attention to the final preparations, including training personnel and conducting system tests. The new terminal is set to be operational by June 2025 end, after a formal opening. Meanwhile, the current terminal will still be used to manage operations in order to achieve a seamless transition.

Outside the terminal, the general infrastructure of the airport is also being improved. There are plans to lengthen the runway to receive bigger aircraft, which would allow for direct international flights to destinations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. A new cargo complex is also being constructed to enhance the airport’s logistics capacity, serving the increasing industrial and IT-based industries of Pune.

This expansion is a milestone for Pune, a city which has become one of the principal economic centers in Maharashtra. The expanded airport is anticipated to attract additional airlines, boost tourist arrivals, and enhance business travel, making a contribution to the economy of the region. For travelers, the new terminal offers a better
