Residents along the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad rivers face heightened risks as authorities release large volumes of water from multiple dams, prompting urgent safety warnings. Emergency teams are mobilized, and locals are urged to stay vigilant to avoid potential flooding dangers.
Pune | 28 July, 2025: On Saturday night, a significant release of water from several dams in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad has put communities living near the Mula, Mutha, and Pawana rivers on edge. The irrigation department reported substantial discharges from key dams, including Khadakwasla at 18,483 cusecs, Mulshi at 9,400 cusecs, Pawana at 1,100 cusecs, Varasgaon at 9,074 cusecs, Panshet at 3,608 cusecs, and Bund Garden at a staggering 26,824 cusecs. This controlled release, driven by ongoing rainfall in the catchment areas, aims to manage rising water levels but has sparked concerns for those in low-lying and riverbed areas.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have sprung into action, deploying emergency response teams to monitor the situation and prepare for any crises. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution, avoid approaching the rivers, and stay informed through official updates. The heightened alert reflects the potential for flooding, particularly in vulnerable neighborhoods close to the riverbanks.
This water release is a critical part of the region’s water management strategy to prevent dam overflows amid persistent rains. However, it underscores the delicate balance between infrastructure demands and community safety. Families living near the rivers are particularly anxious, as the rising water levels could disrupt daily life and threaten homes. The irrigation department is closely tracking conditions, promising regular updates to keep the public informed and safe.
For many residents, the alert is a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability during the monsoon season. Local authorities are emphasizing preparedness, encouraging people to follow safety advisories and avoid risky areas. Emergency teams remain on standby, ready to assist at a moment’s notice, while the community braces for potential challenges in the coming days.
As Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad navigate this tense situation, the focus remains on protecting lives and minimizing risks. Residents are banding together, staying alert, and relying on timely communication from officials to weather this period of uncertainty. The situation highlights the importance of proactive measures and community resilience in the face of natural challenges.
