Pune’s residents face recurring flood threats as heavy rains turn streets into rivers. The city’s civic body rolls out a comprehensive disaster response strategy to protect vulnerable communities.
Pune,June,26 2025 -Pune is gearing up for the monsoon season, with early rains already testing the city’s resilience. Last year’s devastating waterlogging, which flooded homes and sparked public frustration, has prompted the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to act decisively. A new disaster management cell now leads the charge, coordinating efforts to prevent a repeat of past chaos. Despite ongoing repairs and challenges like silt-clogged drains, the PMC has crafted a detailed flood response plan to ensure swift action during emergencies.

The city’s twelve main stormwater drains, feeding into the Mula and Mutha rivers, pose a significant risk during intense downpours. Low-lying slum areas and informal settlements along these rivers are especially vulnerable to flooding. To address this, the PMC has identified 71 locations for temporary shelters, equipped with essential facilities to relocate residents safely. Around 39 localities, including Pulachi Wadi, Kamgar Putla Complex, and Dattawadi, are prone to waterlogging, with the Katraj-to-Navi Peth stormwater channel being a major concern due to frequent overflows.
The PMC has mapped flood risks along the Mula, Mutha, and Pavana rivers, marking blue lines for flood zones and red lines for critical control limits. Flood management is divided into four phases, from preparedness to critical threat levels, ensuring a structured response. A deputy commissioner oversees the entire operation, with zonal deputies managing flood control in their areas to avoid confusion and ensure accountability.
With a modernized disaster management cell at the civic headquarters, Pune is better equipped to monitor flood risks, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions. The cell also keeps residents informed about water releases from Khadakwasla dam, which triggers alerts at 20,000 cusecs and rescue operations at 40,000 cusecs. Through proactive planning and clear responsibilities, Pune aims to protect its citizens and keep the city afloat during the monsoon’s wrath.
