Pune: City’s Most Wanted on Radar: Police Set to Clean Up the Streets
Crime Branch launches crackdown on 4,000 hardened criminals; surveillance tightened using tech and citizen input. Police vow swift action to end public intimidation and street-level hooliganism.
Pune, April 22, 2025: In a strong push to bring back peace on the streets, the Crime Branch has kicked off a bold plan to tackle the menace of goons who strut around with weapons, spreading fear across the city and its suburbs.
Over the past five years, more than 37,000 individuals have had criminal cases registered against them—but now, the spotlight is on the worst of the worst. A focused crackdown is being launched on 4,000 hardened criminals with serious charges to their name.
This crackdown comes under the direct orders of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, with Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade spearheading the initiative. A detailed dossier is being compiled on each of these offenders—including the types of crimes they’ve committed, the current status of charge sheets, and past preventive actions taken against them.
Particular attention is being given to those booked under the MCOCA and MPDA Acts, and for serious offenses like murder, attempted murder, molestation, torture, and home invasions. Criminals known to instill fear in the public by openly brandishing weapons are being closely tracked.
Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) across all zones have been instructed to initiate strict action, while senior inspectors from every police station will personally monitor these criminals’ activities. Their crime records, previous warnings, and preventive actions will be thoroughly reviewed—swift action will follow wherever necessary.
To sharpen surveillance, the police will use a mix of technology and human intel—ranging from CCTV footage and mobile tower locations to social media activity and local intelligence networks.
What’s more, police teams will proactively visit localities, holding “corner meetings” to hear from residents, workers, and business owners. Public complaints will directly inform police action against local troublemakers.
