Pune is struggling with a new surge of COVID-19 infections with 31 active cases reported as Maharashtra’s count increases to 485 with 68 new cases on May 31, 2025. The upsurge, fueled by new Omicron sub-variants, has health authorities on high alert while the situation is still in hand with containment of no notable increase in severe cases. The active steps of the state and constant vigil try to check the spread while taking care to maintain public security.

Pune | June 02 , 2025: In Pune district, the cases are spread throughout main areas and 15 under Pune Municipal Corporation and six under Pimpri Chinchwad. Maharashtra has tested over 11,501 COVID-19 cases since January 1, 2025, with 814 confirmed cases in the state. India reported 363 new cases in 24 hours up to June 1, 2025, and active cases are over 3,000. Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 1,336, followed by Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. Two fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, one each in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the need for ongoing caution.

The increase in cases is attributed to emerging sub-variants of Omicron, such as KP.2, which belongs to the FLiRT group, first found worldwide in January 2025 and becoming prevalent in Maharashtra from March-April. Pune registered 51 KP.2 cases, with Thane having 20, and other districts such as Amravati, Aurangabad, Solapur, Ahmednagar, Sangli, Nashik, and Latur being affected. These new variants, with increased transmissibility, have not resulted in a corresponding rise in hospitalizations, with patients having mild symptoms such as headache, sore throat, cough, and fatigue. The Indian Council of Medical Research, in association with the World Health Organization, is closely monitoring these variants to evaluate their effects on vaccine immunity and public health.

Health officials reiterate that although the variants are spreading quickly, they are causing mild illness only, and there is no reason for alarm. All preventive measures, such as wearing masks in public areas, observing social distancing, and getting oneself vaccinated, continue to be followed. High-risk groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, and people with comorbidities, are advised to exercise caution. Hospitals in Maharashtra are equipped with enough oxygen beds, ventilators, and medicines to manage any potential rush.

Pune’s response involves stepped-up testing and monitoring, with the National Institute of Virology and other facilities studying samples to monitor variant spread. The city health infrastructure stands ready, poised to coordinate with the Union Health Ministry for further support, if required. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant but not panicked, following basic COVID-19 protocols to avert further spread. As Pune transitions through this surge, the combined effort of the health authorities and community seeks to contain the virus, keeping all residents safe while keeping the situation under observation.
