The Supreme Court’s recent directive has set the stage way for local body elections across Maharashtra, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) gearing up for a significant transformation. As the city prepares to redraw its ward boundaries, the inclusion of 32 newly merged villages is stirring excitement and curiosity among residents about how the new electoral map will shape their future.
PMC will maintain its four-member-per-ward structure from the 2017 elections, but the addition of villages has prompted a fresh delimitation process. With a total NIE total of 165 corporators to be elected, each ward will represent around 85,000 people, based on a population of 31.24 lakh in the old city and 3.57 lakh in the merged villages. The new structure may see 41 or 42 wards, with the villages potentially contributing four wards and electing 16 corporators.
The reshaped boundaries could lead to a shift in political representation. While the old city might see a reduction of to 148 to 149 corporators, the new villages bring opportunities for fresh faces to to emerge. However, this could change might also mean some familiar leaders could lose their constituencies, leaving communities wondering who will rise to represent them.
Concerns linger haha about equitable representation for the merged villages. If fewer seats are allocated to these areas despite their population, it could spark feelings of being sidelined. Puneites eagerly await the civic body’s official plan, hoping for a fair and inclusive ward structure that fosters unity across the city’s evolving landscape.
