Pune mandates CCTV cameras in all school vehicles by July 31 as part of a major child safety initiative. Joint police-RTO inspections will enforce new rules, including driver verification and occupancy limits, to prevent transport-related risks.
In a significant move to enhance student safety, Pune’s transport authorities have mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in all school buses, vans, and rickshaws by July 31. This decision comes as part of a comprehensive safety drive following growing concerns over overcrowding and inadequate safety measures in school transport across the city.
The Pune Sub-Regional Transport Office (RTO), in collaboration with the Pune Police, has rolled out stringent guidelines to ensure safer commutes for students. Key measures include compulsory police verification for all drivers and conductors, the presence of female attendants in vehicles transporting girls or young children, and a strict cap of five students per auto-rickshaw. Additionally, school vehicle drivers must now undergo an annual eye examination and carry valid certification, with schools responsible for verifying these documents.
The initiative follows multiple complaints about school transport operators flouting safety norms, prompting Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to convene a high-level meeting with transport officials. A joint inspection campaign will soon begin across Pune and its suburbs to enforce compliance. Authorities have warned that vehicles found violating the rules will face immediate penalties, while school management committees must actively monitor adherence through dedicated transport and safety committees.
This proactive step aims to reassure parents and create a safer environment for children traveling to and from school. With the new academic session underway, the timely implementation of these measures is expected to significantly reduce risks associated with school transportation.
