Pune Metro Phase-2 gets Union Cabinet approval. Two new elevated corridors will connect key suburbs like Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, and Wagholi, aiming to ease traffic and improve public transport.

Pune| June 25, 2025: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to Phase-2 of the Pune Metro project. The new phase includes the expansion of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor through two additional stretches: Vanaz to Chandni Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B).

These new extensions are expected to significantly improve Pune’s east-west connectivity and are part of the city’s long-term Comprehensive Mobility Plan.

The second phase will feature two elevated corridors stretching a total of 12.75 kilometers. These corridors will include 13 new stations, strategically located to serve rapidly growing areas such as Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.

The total estimated cost of the project stands at Rs 3,626.24 crore. The funding will be equally shared by the Central Government, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies.

The new lines will be fully integrated with the existing and upcoming metro lines in Pune. They will connect with Line-1 (Nigdi to Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi to District Court) at the District Court Interchange Station. This will ensure seamless multimodal transport across various parts of the city.

In addition, long-distance bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be consolidated at Chandni Chowk, while those from Aurangabad and Ahmednagar will connect through Wagholi. This move is aimed at providing easier access to the metro system for intercity travelers.

Once completed, these new corridors are expected to ease congestion on major routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road. The metro will offer a safer, faster, and more eco-friendly alternative for daily commuters.

Ridership on Line 2 is expected to grow significantly. Daily passenger estimates suggest numbers could rise from 96,000 in 2017 to 2.01 lakh in 2037, reaching up to 3.49 lakh by 2057.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has been appointed as the executing agency for the project. Pre-construction activities, including topographical surveys and design consultations, have already begun.

Pune Metro’s Phase-2 expansion marks a significant step in the city’s urban development. With construction expected to be completed in four years, the new routes aim to transform daily travel for lakhs of residents and support Pune’s growing transport needs.
