Pune, April 29, 2025: Pune’s metro system is in line for a massive expansion with proposals to link it directly to Pune International Airport in a big boost to urban mobility.
The expansion from Kharadi to the airport will be part of the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi corridor that will provide connect for all metro stations. The development follows that officials had earmarked Kharadi’s fast-paced commercial and residential development as the perfect place to create a multimodal transportation hub that would connect all the metro lines with airport connectivity.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has been entrusted with the funding of the Detailed Project Report, while Maha Metro will be responsible for preparing it. Once in operation, this connection will allow passengers from all over Pune’s current metro network – the Nigdi-Swargate, Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar, and Vanaz-Ramwadi lines – to access the airport without changing trains. The project assumes greater importance as Pune’s population exceeds 10 million, necessitating future-proof infrastructure to accommodate increasing transport needs for the next 50-100 years.
At the same time, work is afoot on the planned Purandar Airport, where land acquisition is underway under the watchful eye of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. The inter-linked developments have the potential to change Pune’s transport landscape by decongesting traffic, enhancing journey efficiency, and enhancing economic connectivity. The metro-airport connection specifically seeks to do away with last-mile connectivity issues while establishing Kharadi as a critical interchange node in the growing transit network of the city, a major jump in Pune’s urban infrastructure growth.
