Pune | 07 June,2025: Taking a pro-active initiative, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced preparations for local body elections, even though the State Government and State Election Commission have not so far taken formal steps. The recent directive from the Supreme Court to hold the elections within four months has motivated the PMC to act at an early stage to make it ready. The administration’s main meeting, conducted by Additional Commissioner Omprakash Diwate, laid out crucial work in the form of the identification of polling stations, the acquisition of space for election offices, and coordinating manpower needs with government departments.
The PMC’s election department, with 15 staff members, is preparing for a complicated process, since municipal elections run on a four-member ward system as against the single-candidate Lok Sabha or Assembly election model. This layout requires additional polling booths and electronic voting machines since every booth will have about 800 voters to handle the rise in the number of candidates and voting hours. The integration of these 23 merged villages into the PMC’s jurisdiction also requires additional polling booths, with the officials being mandated to conduct surveys for possible sites and evaluate current facilities.
To make the process more efficient, the PMC is checking the lists of voters to cancel out old or incorrect entries, including those of key personalities no longer present in the area. The administration is also consulting government agencies to get information about available personnel to help the election process. Against the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s deadline, an early move by the PMC demonstrates a resolve to secure a smooth and efficient electoral process, paving the way for prompt compliance with the court’s order.
