Two young men were caught selling homemade and imported liquor, along with gutkha, from a handcart in Pune’s bustling Swargate area. The seizure of cash and contraband sparks concerns about illegal street trade.

Pune,June,26 2025-On a late Tuesday night, the streets of Pune’s Swargate area became the scene of a surprising police operation. Acting on a tip-off, Khadak police swooped in on two men, Kiran Govind Gore, 28, and Tejas Kiran Ukarande, 20, who were peddling illegal goods from a handcart near Panna Chambers on Chhatrapati Shivaji Road. The duo, residents of Taljai Pathar and Padmavati, had packed white sacks with homemade liquor, local and imported alcohol brands, and banned gutkha and pan masala, ready to sell in the heart of the city.
A search revealed a stash that included 10 liters of homemade liquor, 29 bottles of local Tango Punch, and several bottles of popular brands like McDowell’s, Imperial Blue, Royal Challenge, Royal Stag, and Old Monk. Alongside the alcohol, Vimal pan masala, V1 tobacco, and RMD gutkha were confiscated, along with ₹32,710 in cash, a two-wheeler, and the handcart used in the operation. The total value of the seized items, including cash and other valuables, amounted to ₹97,297.
The arrests have raised alarm about the open sale of illegal liquor and banned substances in Pune’s busy streets. The Khadak police have launched a thorough investigation to uncover the source of the contraband and whether a larger network is at play. For now, the community is left grappling with the reality of such illicit trade happening right under their noses, prompting calls for stricter vigilance to protect the city’s safety and well-being.
