Pune’s rail congestion to ease with a new 80-km outer bypass from Talegaon to Urli. Nine stations and 160 kmph speed planned; project to finish in four years, says Railways.
Pune | August 1, 2025: In a significant move to ease passenger congestion at Pune Railway Station, the Railways have planned an 80-kilometer outer bypass line between Talegaon and Urli, which will include third and fourth railway tracks. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and land survey for the project have been submitted by Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.
This new bypass line will feature dual tracks and nine new railway stations, allowing trains to run at a speed of 160 kmph. The key objective is to divert long-distance and high-traffic routes to reduce pressure on Pune station, which remains heavily burdened.
Two new terminals by December
To further reduce congestion, two terminals — Hadapsar and Khadki — are also under development. Both terminals are expected to be completed by the end of December 2025. Once operational, Pune Station will undergo redevelopment, including extension of platforms to accommodate long-distance trains more efficiently.
Third and fourth line plans on key routes
The long-pending third and fourth tracks between Pune and Mumbai, and Pune to Solapur till Wadi Junction, have now been officially approved. The proposed outer bypass line from Talegaon to Urli will now serve as this third and fourth corridor — a revised and more robust plan.
Proposed stations on the bypass route:
- New Talegaon (Main Station)
- Varale
- Sant Tukaram Maharaj
- Kuruli (Chakan)
- Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj
- Wagholi
- Kolwadi
- Kunjirwadi Cabin
- Urli (via bypass)
