Pune| May 28, 2025 : Pune district has been blessed with substantial rainfall this May, boosting water levels in the region’s dams much earlier than usual. Typically, pre-monsoon showers occur in May across the catchment areas of Pune’s dams, but significant water storage usually begins only after the monsoon sets in by late June. This year, however, abundant rains have led to a notable rise in dam water storage well before time.

Over the past few days, Pune and its surrounding areas have experienced heavy rainfall. This continuous downpour has increased the water reserves in all four major dams supplying Pune city—Khadakwasla, Panshet, Wadivale, and Andhra. As of Sunday evening, combined storage across these dams reached approximately 5.66 TMC, rising to 5.70 TMC even after daily canal releases.

The early replenishment of these reservoirs is good news for Pune city, which often faces water shortages during summer. Thanks to these rains, the impending water crisis may be averted this year.

However, the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Pune district, forecasting heavy rains to continue for the next 24 hours and possibly until May 31. The alert includes Pune city, its district, and the nearby Ghat areas.

Senior meteorologist Dr. Ramchandra Sable has cautioned farmers to hold off on sowing crops for now. He advises waiting until after the first phase of the monsoon ends around June 3, recommending that sowing begin only by the end of the first week of June to ensure better crop success.

With this early rainfall, Pune is witnessing a promising start to the monsoon season, providing relief and hope for the region’s water situation.
