PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase launches Pune’s own Disaster Response Force.
A bold step toward faster, smarter emergency relief in the region
Pune: April 30, 2025
In a major step towards strengthening emergency preparedness, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has launched the Pune Metropolitan Disaster Response Force (PDRF).

Spearheaded by PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, the initiative underscores the administration’s proactive approach to safeguarding the region against natural and man-made disasters. This newly formed force will play a crucial role in aiding citizens during natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, cyclones, and fires.
PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase formally announced the creation of the PDRF in the presence of Additional Commissioner Deepak Singla, Chief Engineer Rinaz Pathan, and other senior officials. Mhase emphasized that the force would act as a rapid response unit, equipped with modern rescue tools and technology, to serve the high-risk areas within the PMRDA’s jurisdiction—covering hilly terrain, old buildings, lakes, dams, and major highways.
To start with, the government has approved a budget of ₹5 crore for the project.
The force will start with a deployment of 30 trained personnel, eventually expanding to a 60-member team. The recruits, trained in fire and emergency rescue by the State Fire Academy, will be hired on a contract basis. To aid mobility and swift response, the PDRF is equipped with a 32-seater troop carrier bus, a tempo, and a pickup van.
The PDRF will work alongside the existing fire department and assist in crises like building collapses, chemical leaks, extreme rainfall, and other emergencies. Mhase noted that while National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units are deployed during large-scale disasters, delays in arrival often impact life-saving efforts during the crucial ‘golden hour’. The establishment of PDRF is aimed at bridging this gap and ensuring faster, localized response.
