A new barrage on the Pavana River will secure Pune’s water future, curbing massive wastage and ensuring a steady supply for homes and industries.
Pune | August 01, 2025: Pune’s water security is set for a major boost with a new ₹110-crore barrage planned at Ravet on the Pavana River. The aging, nearly 100-year-old barrage, struggling with heavy silt buildup and structural damage, has been losing around 50 million litres of water daily. This wastage, coupled with its inability to meet the growing demands of a rapidly urbanizing region, has prompted the Maharashtra government to act swiftly.
The existing barrage, originally built for a much smaller population, is no longer up to the task. It supports critical water needs, supplying 510 million litres per day (MLD) to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 120 MLD to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), and 30 MLD to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran. However, during monsoons, silt from upstream clogs its basin, reducing storage to barely a day’s worth of water. This forces the release of 1,200 cusecs (about 500–550 MLD) from the Pavana dam daily, of which 50 MLD goes to waste due to the barrage’s inefficiencies.
The new barrage, designed to be 4.5 metres high and 276 metres long, promises to transform water management in the region. It will store enough water to last 15 to 21 days, significantly reducing wastage and improving flood control during heavy rains. The project, led by the Water Resources Department, is a collaborative effort with PMC, PCMC, and MIDC sharing the funding. After reviewing four architectural proposals, a final design has been chosen, and construction is expected to begin soon.
For residents of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, this means a more reliable water supply for daily needs, from drinking to household use. Industries, too, will benefit from a steady flow, supporting the region’s economic growth. The project also addresses safety concerns, as the old barrage’s weakened state poses flood risks during monsoons.
This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable water management, ensuring that every drop counts in a city facing rapid growth. By replacing an outdated structure with a modern, efficient barrage, Pune is taking a vital step toward securing its water future for generations to come.
