Two Pune women suffered extreme dowry abuse—one died by suicide, another was violently expelled. These cases demand urgent action to end dowry cruelty and protect women’s rights.
In Pune, two harrowing incidents have once again exposed the brutal persistence of dowry-related abuse, revealing the grim vulnerabilities women still face in marital homes. The first case involves 29-year-old Deepika Pramod Jadhav, a well-educated woman who ended her life after enduring relentless harassment from her mother-in-law for dowry.
Married just months earlier, Deepika was subjected to constant demands for money and gold, along with verbal and emotional abuse, until the torment became unbearable, leading her to hang herself on June 20. Her grieving father filed a police complaint, accusing the mother-in-law of driving his daughter to suicide. In a separate but equally horrifying incident, a 32-year-old woman from Bhavani Peth was beaten, threatened, and finally thrown out of her marital home by her husband and in-laws for failing to meet their dowry demands. After enduring physical and mental torture, she sought refuge and legal action by filing a complaint at Khadak police station. These cases underscore a disturbing truth: despite stringent laws and societal progress, dowry abuse remains a deadly menace, pushing women to the brink of despair—or worse. The tragedies call for urgent systemic intervention, stronger enforcement of anti-dowry laws, and a cultural shift to eradicate this deep-rooted evil.
