Hadapsar and Fursungi, in Pune, on May 27, 2025, were sites of pandemonium as three road crashes within a day indicated scale of local infrastructure. Citizens are raising their voices about dilapidated roads, lack of maintenance, and ignored drainage, which have made commuting a life-threatening experience. The scale of pressure is mounting on Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to treat these complaints, with locals demanding repairs at the earliest, transparency, and accountability to avert more disasters.

Pune | June 02 , 2025: The accidents, which took place in zones such as Tukai Darshan, Hadapsar Nagar, Fursungi, Palkhi Highway, and Solapur Road, were attributed to neglected roads with potholes, sunken manholes, and damaged drainage chambers. Recent development activities, including drainage ones, have rendered roads in disarray, with sub-standard asphalting and concretization works not able to hold against rains during the monsoon season. The resultant uneven terrain has resulted in recurrent mishaps, making these stretches accident hotspots. Traffic congestion, aggravating by illegal hawkers and parked buses and trucks, have added to the mayhem, turning daily travel into an ordeal for residents.
Residents have expressed anger over the PMC’s inertia in spite of frequent complaints. Citizens attribute the below-standard roadwork and inadequate monitoring as major reasons for the hazardous situation. They are demanding a speedy audit of road maintenance procedures, asking the PMC to hold engineers and contractors accountable for negligence. Some proposals include posting the names and contact numbers of contractors at the sites so that defects could be reported immediately, along with stringent action against those who provide faulty infrastructure. Compensation for the victims of accidents is also an urgent demand since families have to contend with injury and loss.
Hadapsar and Fursungi, which have been marked as traffic blackspots by the Pune traffic police, have been beset by infrastructure problems such as encroachments and poor service roads for long. The recent accidents highlight the need for handling these systemic problems. Though the PMC has undertaken road repair initiatives in the past, including having maintenance vans on site, these too have come short, with newly repaired roads being swept away during heavy rains.
Residents are now demanding holistic solutions that include improved drainage systems, regular maintenance audits, and better enforcement against illegal parking and encroachments. The demand for transparency includes announcing work schedules and contractor information to ensure accountability. As traffic and the population of Pune keep increasing, the demand for strong infrastructure is more urgent than ever. The three accidents on May 27 are a grim reminder of what happens due to civic apathy. The city administration has to take prompt measures to regain confidence, ensure safety, and avoid more casualties. Fursungi and Hadapsar roads are a dangerous test for commuters till that time.
