PMC has begun removing old dams in the Mula-Mutha River to prevent monsoon floods. However, debris from demolished structures remains, raising concerns about continued water flow obstruction and safety.
Pune, June 20, 2025: The Mula-Mutha River, which flows through the heart of Pune city, has long been choked by silt and debris, much of it caused by old and unused dams scattered across its stretch. While these structures once served a purpose, they are now outdated and are obstructing the natural flow of water, especially during the monsoon. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now taken matters into its own hands, initiating the removal of such abandoned dams and dilapidated bridges.
Recently, PMC demolished a decaying bridge in the Vriddheshwar-Siddheshwar Ghat area, as part of its flood-prevention plan. However, even after the structure was razed, its rubble was left inside the river, posing a fresh concern. Residents and environmentalists are now raising questions about how such negligence might again block water flow or even worsen flood risks.
In addition to this site, similar non-functional dams and structures exist in areas like Dengle Pool, Shivane, Khadki, and Sangvi. These not only collect silt but also act as blockages when the water levels rise during the rainy season, increasing the flood threat to the surrounding localities.
Recognizing the danger, PMC has started removing these obsolete dams at its own expense after corresponding with related authorities, including the Water Resources Department. Alongside these removals, bushes and trees growing in the riverbed, which further hinder the flow of water, will also be cleared soon.
The move has been welcomed as a necessary step, but officials are now being urged to complete the cleanup thoroughly — including the removal of leftover debris — to ensure that the river can breathe and flow freely again.
