Pune’s prepaid rickshaw booths at the railway station have transformed travel, earning drivers ₹1 crore in a year while saving passengers ₹2 crore. The fair, meter-based system ensures affordable rides and supports local livelihoods.
Pune | 28 July, 2025: For travelers stepping off trains at Pune Railway Station, the journey to their destination is now smoother and fairer, thanks to the prepaid rickshaw booths launched on July 27, 2024. In just one year, this innovative system has empowered 1,406 registered rickshaw drivers to collectively earn ₹1 crore by ferrying passengers across the city. More impressively, by sticking to meter-based fares, the initiative has saved commuters an estimated ₹2 crore, sparing them from the overcharging that once marred their experience. It’s a win-win that’s brought trust and reliability to Pune’s bustling transport scene.
Before the booths, some drivers charged arbitrary fares, leaving passengers feeling cheated. The prepaid system, introduced by the Baghtoy Rickshawala organization, changed that. Open 24/7, the booths assign passengers to drivers in an organized queue, ensuring transparency and fairness. Over the past year, 52,484 rickshaw trips were completed, each one a testament to the system’s success. For drivers, it’s a steady source of income; for passengers, it’s a hassle-free way to travel without worrying about being overcharged.
The impact is deeply personal for the drivers. One rickshaw driver earned over ₹3 lakh, while another brought in ₹2.53 lakh, numbers that reflect not just earnings but the dignity of honest work. Many others have seen their livelihoods transformed, supporting families and dreams through consistent, fair pay. For passengers, the savings mean more than just money—it’s about feeling respected and valued in a city that can sometimes feel overwhelming. The booths have become a beacon of trust, making every ride a step toward a fairer Pune.
The success of the railway station booths has sparked calls for similar setups at other key spots like Wakdewadi, Sangamwadi, Swargate, and areas with private bus stands. Commuters see the value in expanding this model, which combines affordability with reliability. The initiative’s first anniversary was celebrated with joy, as women rickshaw drivers cut a cake, symbolizing the community spirit behind this transformative effort. It’s a reminder that small changes can ripple outward, touching countless lives.
Pune’s prepaid rickshaw booths are more than a transport solution—they’re a story of fairness, hard work, and community. For drivers, it’s a chance to earn a living with pride. For passengers, it’s the comfort of knowing they’ll reach their destination without being overcharged. As the city looks to expand this model, the booths stand as a model of how innovation and empathy can make urban life better for everyone.
