In a major improvement to city mobility, the service roads of the Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway No. 48 (NH-48) in Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal limits are to undergo a major expansion. The existing 12-metre roads will be expanded to 24 metres, doubling their capacity to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity. The ambitious project is being undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with the aim of simplifying transportation and serving the region’s increasing infrastructure demands.

Pune | May 15, 2025: The order to expedite the development was given at a high-level review meeting attended by PCMC officials and NHAI officials. The NHAI has prepared a complete project plan, and development will go forward under its watch. The widening is likely to solve perennial problems of traffic congestion and poor road infrastructure, which have bogged down commuters and businesses along this vital corridor.
In order to make the process go smoothly, instant orders have been issued to dismantle all hurdles delaying the project. Hoardings, stalls, and constructions on the service roads without prior permission are to be immediately dismantled. The development plan focuses on forward-looking planning, incorporating necessary utilities such as sewer lines, water pipes, electricity cables, and drainage systems. Current service road facilities will also be included to ensure serviceability during and after the expansion process.
Harmonization of municipal departmental work is a central focus, with electricity-related, drainage, water supply, encroachment, signboard, and licensing operations to be harmonized. The PCMC has been ordered to assist the NHAI to the hilt in ensuring that the project falls in line with its time frame. The coordination seeks to reduce dislocation and provide a strong infrastructure overhaul benefiting commuters, residents, and industries.
Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway is a lifeline for Pimpri-Chinchwad, connecting the flow of goods and people. Service roads, parallel to NH-48, have a key role to play in feeding local traffic and decongesting the main highway. Widening them to 24 metres will boost accessibility, increase safety, and absorb the pace of urbanization in the region. The project is part of the larger attempt to upgrade transportation infrastructure in Pune’s industrial-commercial hub.
With work progressing, emphasis continues to be on careful planning and implementation to prevent delays and deliver quality. The widening assures a change in the commuting experience, with smoother, wider, and better-stocked service roads. With the NHAI and PCMC together, this project is a huge step towards green urban development and better connectivity along one of India’s most crowded highways.
