Pune’s public transport is getting a major upgrade with 1,700 smart bus stops planned in the first phase. These modern stops will offer real-time information, safety features, and shelter for a better commuting experience.
Pune | 28 July, 2025: Imagine waiting for a bus in Pune without worrying about rain, heat, or missing your ride. The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is turning this vision into reality with a plan to build 1,700 smart bus stops across the city in its first phase. Inspired by Delhi’s advanced bus stop model, these new stops aim to make public transport more comfortable, safe, and user-friendly for daily commuters. It’s a step toward a more connected and commuter-centric Pune, where catching a bus feels less like a chore and more like a seamless part of the day.

These smart bus stops will go beyond basic shelters. They’ll feature digital displays with real-time bus schedules, ensuring commuters know exactly when their ride will arrive. CCTV surveillance will enhance safety, particularly for women, while dedicated spaces for public service messages will keep passengers informed. Designed to shield commuters from harsh weather, the stops will provide much-needed relief from Pune’s scorching summers and monsoon downpours. This thoughtful design reflects an understanding of the daily struggles faced by those relying on public transport, making their journeys more pleasant and reliable.
To bring this ambitious project to life, PMPML is adopting the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, partnering with private players to ensure efficient construction and maintenance. A team from PMPML will soon visit Delhi to study its cutting-edge bus stop infrastructure, learning from a city that has successfully modernized its public transport facilities. This collaboration signals a strong commitment from Pune’s authorities to elevate the city’s transportation network, putting commuters’ needs at the forefront.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to transform Pune’s public transport into a system that’s not just functional but also welcoming. With 1,700 stops planned in the first phase, the project promises to touch every corner of the city, from bustling urban hubs to quieter neighborhoods. For the thousands of residents who rely on PMPML buses daily, these upgrades mean more than just convenience—they’re about dignity, safety, and feeling valued as commuters.
As Pune grows, so does the need for a transport system that keeps pace with its vibrant community. These smart bus stops are a bold step toward that future, blending technology and human-centered design to create a city where getting around is easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
