Pune’s Purandar Airport project offers farmers 10% of their land as developed AeroCity plots plus four times the market value as compensation. This initiative aims to balance development with the livelihoods of over 2,000 farming families.

Pune| 23 July, 2025: For the farmers of Purandar taluka, the long-delayed international airport project is no longer just a threat to their fertile lands but a chance for a brighter future. On July 22, 2025, the Pune district administration unveiled a compassionate compensation package to ease the pain of land acquisition for the Purandar International Airport. Farmers who voluntarily give up their land will receive developed plots equivalent to 10% of their surrendered area in a planned AeroCity near the airport site, alongside monetary compensation at four times the market value. This dual-benefit approach, finalized in a high-level Mumbai meeting, seeks to support over 2,000 families across seven villages while advancing Pune’s connectivity dreams.

The Purandar Airport, set to span 2,673 hectares across Vanpuri, Udachiwadi, Ekhatpur, Munjawadi, Kumbharvalan, Pargaon, and Khanwadi, has faced years of resistance from farmers fearing loss of livelihood. Their fertile fields, lush with sugarcane, figs, and vegetables, are their lifeline, and past proposals offering only cash sparked protests, with over 3,000 objections filed. The new package, under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) Act, addresses these concerns by offering AeroCity plots on a first-come, first-served basis, giving farmers a stake in the region’s growth. Around 700 acres are earmarked for this innovative AeroCity, promising modern amenities and economic opportunities.

This initiative humanizes the acquisition process, recognizing the emotional and economic ties farmers have to their land. By offering developed plots, the government ensures families can benefit from the airport’s economic boost, potentially turning farmers into stakeholders in a thriving urban hub. The fourfold monetary compensation, based on ready reckoner rates, aims to provide financial security, addressing demands for fair remuneration. The process is transparent, with farmers invited to submit consents at the Pune Collector’s office or Saswad’s Sub-Divisional Officer’s office, ensuring early applicants secure prime AeroCity plots.

Despite the optimism, challenges remain. Some farmers, backed by the Vimantal Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti, demand higher compensation—up to ₹10 crore per acre—or refuse to part with their land, citing its agricultural value. The administration, led by District Collector Jitendra Dudi, is engaging through hearings and surveys to build trust. With land acquisition targeted for completion within six months, the project could transform Pune’s infrastructure, decongesting Lohgaon Airport and boosting regional growth.

For Purandar’s farmers, this package offers a lifeline—blending tradition with progress. As the AeroCity vision takes shape, families hope to preserve their legacy while embracing new opportunities, ensuring their voices are heard in Pune’s journey toward global connectivity.
