Rahul Gandhi will sponsor the education of 22 children from J&K’s Poonch district orphaned in cross-border firing during Operation Sindoor. Aid begins July 29 after official verification of beneficiaries.

Poonch (Jammu & Kashmir), July 29, 2025: In a deeply compassionate gesture, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has announced that he will take guardianship of 22 children from Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, who lost their parents in cross-border firing and the Pahalgam terror attack during Operation Sindoor.

According to J&K Congress leader Tariq Hamid Karra, Gandhi will bear the full cost of education for these children, many of whom have lost both parents or their family’s sole breadwinner. The affected children are from one of the worst-hit regions along the Line of Control, where Pakistani shelling has often left families devastated.

In May, Rahul Gandhi visited Poonch and met with local residents and party workers. During the visit, he instructed local leaders to identify children most affected by the conflict. Following a government-verified survey, the names of the 22 children were finalized. The first installment of educational aid is expected to be released on Wednesday, July 29, to ensure that these children can continue their schooling without interruption.

Among the children Gandhi met during his visit were Urba Fatima and Zain Ali, both of whom lost family members in the violence. Interacting with them in a school setting, Rahul said with emotion:
“I feel very sad. I’m very proud of you. I miss you, my friends. I’m a little scared, but don’t worry. Everything will be normal. You should study hard and make many friends in school.”

The move has been welcomed across party lines and by citizens as a rare example of personal commitment in the political sphere, especially towards the innocent victims of border conflicts.
