Indian Railways mandates Aadhaar e-verification for online Tatkal ticket booking to curb misuse. Only verified users can now book, ensuring fair access to urgent travel during peak seasons and festivals.

Pune | 05 June, 2025: In a move aimed at curbing misuse and ensuring that genuine passengers benefit from the Tatkal ticket facility, the Ministry of Railways has announced a major update: online Tatkal ticket booking will now be permitted only for users with Aadhaar e-authentication.
The decision comes as Tatkal tickets, introduced for last-minute travel needs, are in high demand, especially during holidays and festivals. However, the system has long been plagued by misuse through bots and agents, often leaving genuine passengers ticketless despite urgent travel requirements.
Only passengers with digitally verified Aadhaar cards will now be allowed to book Tatkal tickets online. This step is expected to filter out fraudulent bookings and give legitimate travelers a fair opportunity. Passengers who have not completed Aadhaar e-verification will no longer be eligible for Tatkal booking on the IRCTC portal or mobile apps.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the need to provide fair access to urgent bookings. During peak seasons, long waiting lists often leave passengers uncertain about their travel plans until the last moment. Though Tatkal was introduced to address this challenge, the misuse of the system by agents and unauthorized users has undermined its purpose. Linking bookings to Aadhaar e-verification is now expected to restore transparency and accountability.
This change means genuine users will now have better chances of securing Tatkal tickets. The step is also likely to reduce chaos and scams caused by illegal bookings. However, passengers must ensure that their Aadhaar cards are e-verified before they attempt to book a Tatkal ticket online.
