Raj-Uddhav Unite for Anti-Hindi March, Ajit Pawar Stays Away Despite Shared Stance

Though Ajit Pawar opposes Hindi from Class 1, he and NCP will not join Raj and Uddhav Thackeray’s July 5 protest march, highlighting political distance despite ideological agreement.

Mumbai | June 28, 2025: The politics over making Hindi a compulsory subject from Class 1 has intensified in Maharashtra. While the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) have taken an aggressive stand opposing this move, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, too, has consistently voiced his disagreement with the policy. However, despite aligning ideologically on the issue, Ajit Pawar and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have chosen not to participate in the July 5 all-party protest march led by Raj Thackeray.

Raj Thackeray has called for a united front against the imposition of Hindi in the early school curriculum. Several political figures, including Uddhav Thackeray, are expected to join the rally. Eye-catching banners promoting the march have surfaced across the state, including one outside Raj Thackeray’s residence, prominently featuring Ajit Pawar’s quote:
“Children should study in their mother tongue till Class 5. Imposing other languages at a young age is not right. I’m not against any language, but this is unnecessary pressure.”

Yet, despite this clear stand, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare, speaking to NDTV Marathi, clarified that the NCP will not participate in the march. He reiterated Ajit Pawar’s earlier statements but stressed the party’s decision to distance itself from the MNS-led protest.

This decision has sparked discussions about the nature of political alliances, with Ajit Pawar taking a policy stand but steering clear of a symbolic opposition event organized by political opponents and allies alike.
