Nurse Nimisha Priya’s death sentence in Yemen has been cancelled after diplomatic and humanitarian efforts. Convicted in a controversial murder case, she may now return home to Kerala soon.
Trivandrum | 29 July, 2025: In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Nimisha Priya, a Kerala-based nurse who was sentenced to death in Yemen, has been granted a reprieve from execution, raising hopes of her safe return to India.
Nimisha, a 37-year-old resident of Palakkad, was convicted in 2017 for the murder of her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi. However, after sustained diplomatic intervention by the Indian government and humanitarian appeals led by the Grand Mufti of India, Kanthapuram AP Abubakkar Musaliyar, her death sentence has officially been cancelled.
An official statement from the Grand Mufti’s office confirmed the news:
“The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was earlier stayed, has now been cancelled. This decision was taken in a high-level meeting held in Sanaa.”
The Case That Shocked Many
Nimisha had gone to Yemen in 2011 after completing her nursing education. In 2015, she entered into a business partnership with local Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi to open a clinic — a legal workaround since foreigners cannot directly own businesses in Yemen. However, the relationship soon turned abusive.
Talal allegedly seized Nimisha’s passport and visa, took control of the clinic, and subjected her to constant physical and financial abuse. Trapped and desperate, Nimisha reportedly attempted to sedate Talal to recover her documents and escape, but he died due to an overdose of narcotics, leading to her arrest and death sentence.
A Long Road to Justice
Her case sparked widespread concern both in India and internationally. Nimisha’s mother, husband, and young daughter back in Kerala had been fighting a relentless legal and diplomatic battle, with appeals reaching the highest levels of Indian diplomacy.
The Indian government’s intervention, coupled with sustained efforts from legal experts, humanitarian groups, and religious leaders, ultimately helped in saving Nimisha from the gallows.
What’s Next?
With the death penalty overturned, there is now renewed hope that Nimisha Priya may soon be repatriated to India. However, legal and procedural formalities in Yemen still remain, and the Indian government is expected to continue working towards bringing her back safely.
A Symbol of Strength
Nimisha’s story has not only brought attention to the vulnerability of Indian workers abroad, especially women, but has also become a symbol of resilience, maternal love, and the power of diplomatic resolve.
