Maval | June 9, 2025: With five drowning incidents reported in just the first eight days of June, local authorities in Maval are urging tourists to exercise extreme caution while visiting popular water bodies during the monsoon.
The latest tragedy occurred on Sunday at Bhushi Dam in Lonavala. Prior to this, one fatality each had been reported at Valvan, Pawana Dam, and Kasarsai Dam. Alarmingly, 22 people lost their lives to drowning across Maval last year, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.
Maval taluka, with its scenic beauty and abundant water bodies, draws tourists year-round — especially during the summer and monsoon seasons. Naane Maval, Pawan Maval, and Andar Maval remain top destinations. Visitors often flock to Pawana Dam, Andra Dam, Vadivale Dam, Kasarsai Dam, and Kundamala for swimming and water-based fun.
However, officials warn that many visitors lack swimming skills or underestimate the depth and dangers of local waters. Others engage in reckless behaviour, further increasing risk.
Police, lifeguards, and social organisations have jointly appealed to tourists not to endanger their lives for momentary fun. Increased patrolling and public awareness efforts are also being ramped up in vulnerable spots.
“Safety must come first — no photograph or thrill is worth a life,” a police spokesperson emphasised.
