With Krishna and Warna rivers overflowing due to dam discharge and heavy rain, villages in Sangli face rising flood threats, crop damage, and travel disruptions; administration urges heightened alertness.
Sangli | July 28, 2025: While rainfall intensity has slightly eased in Palus taluka and the Krishnakath region of Sangli, flood concerns have escalated due to heavy rains in dam catchment areas over the past two days. The Krishna River, which was already flowing in two directions, overflowed its banks on Sunday, with water levels rising by 4.5 feet in a single day. The Nagthane dam was submerged by afternoon.
The discharge from the Koyna and Warna dams has significantly increased the water level of both Krishna and Warna rivers, now flowing above the danger mark. The Krishna River has reached 25 feet, prompting the administration to alert all riverside villages.
As per latest reports, 31,746 cusecs of water have been released from the Koyna dam into the Krishna basin, and 14,880 cusecs from the Warna dam. This surge has led to flooding of surrounding farmlands, resulting in crop damage, especially in areas like Burli, Amnapur, and Dhangaon. Farmers, in a desperate move, are rushing to harvest grass before more fields submerge.
The Bhilwadi Police and Police Patil Deepak Karadkar have halted traffic on the Nagthane dam for safety reasons, cutting off Nagthane from Shirgaon. In some areas, amateur youth were seen catching fish in overflowing streams, raising safety concerns.
The heavy rains have also lowered the temperature but significantly increased humidity. With the Koyna Dam catchment area still receiving heavy rainfall, authorities have issued fresh warnings to all villages along the riverbanks to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
