Pune, April 17, 2025 – A wave of anger and grief has swept through Pimpri-Chinchwad after two horrifying cases of animal cruelty came to light—including allegations of a Rs 5 lakh contract to exterminate stray dogs in an upscale society.
Nine Dogs Poisoned, Three Fighting for Life
In a gruesome incident at Mahindra Antheia Society, 12 stray dogs were poisoned. Three died instantly, six succumbed during treatment, and three remain critical. Shockingly, activists claim that some residents pooled money to hire someone to kill the dogs—allegations now under police investigation.
“There’s no CCTV proof of these dogs ever biting or causing trouble. They’ve lived here for years without harming anyone,” said animal activist Kunal Kamat. “This was a deliberate attempt to remove them because some people didn’t want a feeding point in the society.”
Brutal Beating in Kalewadi
Just a day before the poisoning, another stray dog in Kalewadi’s Krantiveer Colony was beaten to death with sticks and stones late on April 13. Eyewitnesses described the attack as so vicious that the dog’s eyes bulged out from the trauma. An old social worker filed a police complaint, leading to an FIR against Satish Jadkar and an accomplice under BNS Section 325 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
“We Encroached Their Space, Not the Other Way Around”
For years, 20-22 stray dogs peacefully coexisted in Mahindra Antheia Society—a complex built on their original habitat. Strays cannot legally be relocated, yet false complaints were allegedly used to justify their elimination.
Police Probe Underway
Senior Inspector Vanita Dhumal confirmed an investigation into the poisoning but said “no concrete evidence of payment has been found yet.” Meanwhile, animal lovers are protesting, calling for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws.
A Growing Pattern of Cruelty?
These incidents highlight an alarming trend of violence against strays in the city. With emotions running high, the question remains: Will the perpetrators face justice, or will more innocent animals pay the price?
