To avoid patient care delays, there are now new guidelines requiring patients to be put in the emergency department within an hour of arrival. Also, blood samples for forensic purposes are now taken under CCTV camera observation and in the presence of police officers to ensure accuracy and integrity in the process.
In addition to minimizing staff downtime, the hospital has established a special room for performing forensic procedures and introduced a shift rotation schedule to avoid long-term assignments in the emergency department. Nurses have been trained to collect and document blood samples for forensic investigations, with biweekly audits to verify adherence to reporting patterns. These actions are intended to eliminate flaws and keep accurate records.
The trigger for these reforms was the inquiry into the Kalyani Nagar accident last year, which revealed serious deficiencies in the emergency department, including sample tampering. The accident led to a proper inquiry by the medical education department, which suggested a chain of reforms. The hospital quickly acted on these suggestions, being very transparent and accountable.
New rules specifically spell out the roles of resident doctors, chief medical officers, department heads, and nurses during forensic examinations so that each participant knows what is expected of them.
