Second Life Lost in Purandar Airport Turmoil, Public Anger Boils Over
Protests against the Purandar Airport project intensified after a second activist’s death, with villagers blaming government pressure and surveillance, demanding immediate cancellation to prevent further tragedies and protect their livelihoods.
Pune| April 19, 2025 — The ongoing unrest over the Purandar Airport project has taken a grim turn once again. For the second time, the protest has been marked by the death of a key participant—Vaman Vasant Memane—whose sudden passing due to a heart attack has reignited outrage across the affected villages.
Locals believe the stress caused by drone monitoring and late-night surveying operations played a significant role in the tragedy. The protestors are not holding back. During Memane’s funeral procession, which paused in front of the Pargaon Memane Gram Panchayat office, the mood shifted from mourning to rebellion.

Farmers, activists, and villagers came together to condemn the government’s persistent push for the airport despite widespread opposition.
A written warning was handed to Sub-Divisional Officer Varsha by the protestors, declaring that if any further such incidents occur, the responsibility will lie with the government.
“How many more lives must we lose before this project is stopped? If another incident like this happens, don’t blame us for what follows,” said a protestor, echoing the sentiment of many.
Memane, a prominent face of the resistance, had reportedly been troubled by reports of multiple two-wheelers conducting surveys late at night.
Residents claim that such activities have led to heightened anxiety among the villagers—especially the elderly—who fear the permanent loss of their lands and identity.
The airport project, which proposes to displace several villages, continues to face stiff resistance. Despite multiple pleas, protests, and dialogues, there has been no pause in official procedures or surveying activities.
The villagers have vowed to continue their fight, calling on the government to halt the airport project immediately. They insist that if their voices continue to be neglected, the agitation will intensify, and accountability for future consequences.
