Mandi | August 2, 2025: A viral video of a foreign tourist cleaning up litter at a scenic tourist spot in Himachal Pradesh has sparked outrage online — and led BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut to strongly criticize the state of cleanliness in her home state.
The video, which Kangana shared on her Instagram story, shows a foreign man collecting garbage and disposing it properly in a dustbin. Speaking to the camera, he remarks,
“Maybe if I have free time, I will sit here and tell people, ‘Pick up this garbage.’ I have no problem telling people.”
Calling the incident “shameful,” Kangana expressed her displeasure over the poor civic sense among some citizens and emphasized the need for greater awareness and responsibility at tourist destinations. As the MP from Mandi, she has previously raised concerns about pollution, particularly plastic waste in rivers and the growing threat to Himachal’s natural beauty caused by reckless tourist behavior.
She also pointed out that many visitors throw garbage from their vehicles, often through children, reflecting a casual disregard for cleanliness. The video has reignited public discourse on civic responsibility, with many questioning why foreign tourists exhibit more awareness and respect for Indian locales than some locals do.
Citizens and environmental activists have since echoed Kangana’s sentiment, urging authorities to implement stricter penalties and increase cleanliness drives, especially in fragile ecological zones.
