Pune’s Shivajinagar bus stand, which was once a hub of activity for daily commuters, has become a distant memory as its reconstruction project continues to rot in a quagmire of bureaucratic red tape and changing priorities. However, five years down the line, passengers are left to struggle with hassle, since no new terminal has come up, with the city’s public transport system left in suspension.

Pune | June 06, 2025: The initial plan, set out in six-year-old MahaMetro-Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) agreement, engaged MahaMetro to construct a new-age bus terminal in lieu of the premium Shivajinagar land. But developments have been set back by a lack of direction and suspected commercial agendas. The highly desirable site is reportedly being considered for profitable commercial complexes at the expense of the immediate need for public facilities. The diversion of priorities has resulted in commuters being left in limbo, making their way through a temporary setup intended to be short-term.
In 2023, MSRTC’s architecture department hired Shashi Prabhu Architects to prepare a new plan, giving hope for development. However, these plans have stalled as responsibility was handed back to MahaMetro, with no binding contract or construction blueprint completed to this day. Repeated promises from local leaders, including sweeping boasts of a state-of-the-art center, have not been followed through on, leaving citizens frustrated and cynical. The lack of clear timeline or accountability has merely made the public more cynical.
The prolonged delay has sparked outrage, with voices from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) highlighting the plight of daily commuters. The temporary bus stand, far from ideal, has forced passengers to endure overcrowded conditions and inadequate facilities, compounding the city’s traffic woes. The lack of progress raises questions about priorities, as the potential for commercial gain appears to overshadow the needs of ordinary citizens who rely on efficient public transport.
This abandoned project is a bitter reminder of bureaucratic lethargy and misplaced priorities in the urban planning of Pune. As the city expands, the inaction on the Shivajinagar bus stand fails its public transport system, the lifeblood for millions of citizens. Demands for clarity and immediate action intensify, with commuters demanding that the needs of people take precedence over commercial interests. Until a firm plan comes through, the tale of Shivajinagar’s bus stand is an infuriating reminder of broken promises, with Pune’s citizens having to work through the implications of a project mired in red tape.
