A stampede at Barabanki’s Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple killed two and injured 29 after a fallen electric wire caused panic. Authorities confirmed normalcy resumed; an investigation is ongoing.

Barabanki | 28 July, 2025: A tragic stampede occurred late Sunday night at the Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple in Haidergarh area of Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, leaving two devotees dead and 29 injured, including women and children. The stampede was triggered by panic after an electric wire broke and fell on a tin shed during the Shravan Monday Jalabhishekam.

The incident unfolded around 2 AM as thousands of devotees had gathered for midnight rituals. According to authorities, monkeys jumped on a live electric wire, causing it to snap and fall into the temple premises, spreading electric current and sparking chaos. Fearing electrocution, the crowd panicked, leading to a stampede.

A police team was already present for security, and more reinforcements were deployed immediately after the mishap. The injured were rushed to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centres, while critically wounded devotees were referred to the Barabanki District Hospital.

District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya visited the site, confirming that the stampede was caused by the electrical scare, not an actual fire or blast. Officials said the situation at the temple is now under control and normal worship has resumed. An investigation is underway to ascertain how such an incident occurred despite police presence and security arrangements.
