As COVID-19 cases rise, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar urges coordinated preparedness, especially for vulnerable groups. Health authorities are monitoring Omicron variants and readying hospitals ahead of the Wari pilgrimage

June 14, 2025 : With the steady increase in COVID-19 cases across the country, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar chaired a high-level review meeting at Vidhan Bhavan to assess the situation and reinforce coordination among health departments. While the new infections are reportedly mild in nature, Pawar stressed that elderly citizens and those with co-morbid conditions must be given special attention.

Officials from Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur joined the meeting via video conferencing, including Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Pune Municipal Commissioner Navalkishore Ram, Pimpri Chinchwad Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and Director of Health Dr. Vijay Kandewad.

Dr. Kandewad informed that new COVID variants, including subtypes JN, XFG, and GF7-9 of Omicron, are currently being detected. These typically present with symptoms like mild fever, cough, and sore throat. However, vulnerable individuals—such as those with cancer, diabetes, or weak immunity—remain at higher risk and should avoid crowded places.

Basic preventive measures like hand hygiene, mask usage, and physical distancing were reiterated. Citizens experiencing severe respiratory symptoms have been advised to seek immediate medical care.

Ajit Pawar also emphasized coordination between the Health Department, Municipal Corporations, and local bodies to manage both the COVID situation and the upcoming Wari pilgrimage. Instructions were given to keep all hospitals equipped and submit regular updates.
