Supreme Court stays Bombay High Court’s acquittal of 12 accused in 2006 Mumbai train blasts that killed 209; issues notice after Maharashtra government challenges verdict, but allows accused to remain free.
New Delhi | July 24, 2025: In a significant development in the 2006 Mumbai local train serial blast case, the Supreme Court has stayed the Bombay High Court’s acquittal of all 12 accused. The decision comes after the Maharashtra government filed a petition challenging the High Court’s verdict, which had overturned the trial court’s earlier convictions.
The Bombay High Court, in a surprising verdict delivered on July 21, had acquitted all 12 accused in connection with the horrific July 11, 2006 blasts that rocked Mumbai’s suburban rail network, killing 209 people and injuring over 700. In 2015, a special trial court had found them guilty, sentencing five to death and seven to life imprisonment.
The High Court’s reversal sparked widespread criticism and concern, prompting the state government to approach the apex court. During the hearing today, the Supreme Court stayed the High Court’s decision and agreed to examine the government’s plea.
While issuing notice to all 12 accused, the court clarified that they will remain out of custody for now but under judicial observation. The matter is now set for a detailed hearing.
This development has once again brought the focus back on one of India’s deadliest terror attacks, with families of victims demanding justice and transparency in the legal process. The Supreme Court’s stay offers a temporary relief to the prosecution and victims’ families, pending further review.
