Tata Group’s decision to set up a ₹500 crore trust reflects its deep social responsibility. This long-term support will bring financial security and renewed hope to the families affected by the tragedy

Following the tragic Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, the Tata Group has taken a significant step to support the families of the victims. A dedicated welfare trust will be established to provide long-term financial and social assistance to the families of passengers and ground personnel who lost their lives. Tata Sons is expected to contribute ₹500 crore to this trust.

In this accident, 241 passengers and 19 ground workers died. Earlier, Tata Sons and Air India had announced ₹1.25 crore as immediate financial aid per victim’s family. The new trust aims to channel this support in a more organized and sustained manner.

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran will play a key role in the trust’s management. The proposal has already been approved by the board. Legal registration and the appointment of a board of trustees are currently underway. The assistance will be routed through a registered public charitable trust and will include various support schemes.

This is not the first such initiative by Tata. After the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the group had set up the Taj Public Service Welfare Trust to support affected hotel staff families.

According to estimates, the total compensation claims may reach $475 million (approx. ₹3,950 crore), with $350 million expected from insurance payouts. Tata Sons has assured swift and fair resolution of all claims.

Air India’s current ownership structure includes 74% with Tata Sons, 25% with Singapore Airlines, and 1% with an employees’ trust.

This board decision came two days after Tata Sons director Noel Tata visited the crash site. The group has clarified that this trust is not a one-time response but a long-term rehabilitation effort.
