A college student in Nanij, Ratnagiri, died by suicide due to depression caused by mobile gaming addiction. The incident has highlighted growing mental health concerns among youth over screen dependency.
Ratnagiri, Maharashtra | June 26, 2025: The increasing complaint by parents about their children being addicted to mobile phones has become all too common. But this concern turned into tragedy in Ratnagiri’s Nanij village, where a young student died by suicide after struggling with depression linked to mobile gaming addiction.
The deceased has been identified as Ravindra Rajendra Bendre, a college student originally from Nevasa in the Ahilyanagar district. He had recently moved to Nanij to stay with his uncle, Vikas Popat, and had taken admission in a local college.
According to the police, Ravindra had become heavily addicted to mobile games and was reportedly unable to overcome the habit. This led to growing frustration, mental restlessness, and eventually, depression.
Unable to cope, Ravindra took the extreme step. He was found hanging in the living room of his uncle’s house, using a towel tied to an iron rod. His family rushed him to the rural hospital in Pali, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The incident has been registered with the Ratnagiri Rural Police, and further investigation is underway.
This is not an isolated case. In recent times, multiple such tragedies have emerged where screen addiction, particularly to mobile gaming, has pushed young minds into deep psychological distress. Mental health experts and educators are urging parents to remain aware of their children’s digital habits and ensure a healthy balance between technology use and real-life interactions.
The tragic death of Ravindra serves as a harsh reminder that unchecked screen addiction can lead to irreversible consequences. There is now a stronger call for awareness, early mental health intervention, and responsible digital usage, especially among teenagers and young adults.
