Pune | 07 June,2025: Kalyan witnessed heightened tension on Saturday as both factions of the Shiv Sena — led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray — launched protests at the historic Durgadi Fort. The agitation was sparked by a ban imposed on Hindu worship at the fort on the occasion of Bakrid (Goat Eid), as the site also serves as a place of Muslim prayer.
On the day of the festival, large police forces were deployed around Lal Chowk and the fort to maintain order. Despite the heavy security, Shiv Sena members attempted to breach barricades to perform aarti at the site. Police detained several leaders, including MLA Vishwanath Bhoir and MLA Rajesh More.
The roots of this agitation trace back to 1949, when the late Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray and Dharmaveer Anand Dighe initiated efforts to assert Hindu worship rights at Durgadi Fort, a symbol of shared religious heritage.
Each year, tensions resurface during Bakrid, when large gatherings of Muslims offer namaz at the fort. To avoid conflict, authorities restrict Hindu access on this day — a move now opposed by Shiv Sena leaders. “Until the temple is kept open, our protest will continue. This is not about one religion; it’s about justice,” said MLA Bhoir.
Both Shiv Sena factions expressed their determination to hold prayers, escalating the standoff. Police have reinforced security to prevent any untoward incidents. As of now, the situation in Kalyan remains tense but under control.
