Three Pune traffic cops were suspended for conducting unauthorised ‘corner action’ instead of managing traffic at assigned posts. The move raises fresh questions about accountability within the traffic department amid growing public frustration.

Pune | June 9, 2025:Despite clear orders from Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to prioritise smooth traffic flow at assigned locations, certain traffic personnel in Pune continue to flout norms — this time at the cost of public trust.
In a swift disciplinary move, three traffic police officials from the Khadak Traffic Department were suspended after they were caught conducting so-called ‘corner action’ — taking enforcement action at unauthorised spots and allegedly engaging in off-the-books dealings — instead of managing traffic at designated chowks.
The suspended officials have been identified as Havildar Santosh Chandrakant Yadav, Balaji Vitthal Pawar, and Monica Praveen Karanjkar. Their suspension has stirred unease within the traffic wing, once again bringing its functioning under scrutiny.
With Pune residents already grappling with worsening traffic congestion, the traffic police’s credibility is at stake. Commissioner Kumar has been actively implementing fresh measures to streamline vehicular movement across the city. However, incidents like this risk undermining those efforts.
According to sources, on May 15, Yadav was deployed at SP Chowk, Pawar at Hirabagh Chowk, and Karanjkar at Bhave Chowk. However, instead of managing traffic at these key junctions, the three were found grouped together at an unassigned location.
“This behaviour is unacceptable and directly affects public perception of the traffic department,” an official said.
As Pune’s roads grow more crowded, the role of each traffic cop remains crucial. Incidents like these only add to the frustration of citizens already burdened by daily traffic woes.
